Drywall repair, with clear assumptions

DIY Drywall Repair Cost Calculator

Enter each damaged spot to estimate repair supplies, optional paint and tools, and a rough work-time allowance. Compare nail holes with larger drywall patches.

Repair dry, sound drywall only. Hidden damage, texture matching, and repainting a whole wall can change the scope.

Measurement system

Drywall damage

Add each damaged spot you want to patch, including its rough size and damage type.

Damaged spots

Use rough measurements for each spot. Nail holes can use a small size.

Project planning note

Review the selected options, site condition, material assumptions, and tool needs before buying supplies. This calculator is meant for rough DIY planning, not a professional quote.

Recommended materials

  • Drywall repair patch or scrap drywall
  • Joint compound
  • Drywall tape
  • Utility knife
  • Sanding sponge
  • Primer for the patched area
  • Matching touch-up paint
  • Basic tool kit allowance

Basic DIY checklist

  • Remove loose drywall paper and lightly square up the damaged area.
  • Apply the patch or backing support, then cover seams with tape or compound.
  • Build up thin coats of joint compound and let each coat dry.
  • Sand smooth, blend texture if needed, then prime the repaired area.
  • Touch up paint and feather the edges into the surrounding wall.

When to call a pro

  • Call a pro if the wall feels soft, damp, cracked, moldy, or the damage keeps coming back.
  • Medium and large drywall patches can be frustrating for beginners because flat seams and texture blending take practice.

This is a rough DIY planning estimate only. Local prices, drying time, wall texture, paint matching, hidden damage, and patch quality can change the real cost and timeline.

Compare repair sizes

How much does a DIY drywall repair cost?

These examples use the same allowances as the calculator. A small hole can still mean buying a whole tub of filler or a sanding tool, so cost does not scale directly with hole area.

Illustrative CAD planning allowances, before tax. These are fixed estimates, not current store prices or contractor quotes. Check local prices before buying.

One nail or screw hole

$8–$18 CAD

Smooth wall; existing tools; patch only.

One 4 × 4 in hole

$65–$180 CAD

Smooth wall; touch-up paint and basic tools included. Matches the calculator’s starting settings.

One 8 × 8 in hole

$55–$130 CAD

Larger repair with backing allowance; smooth wall; existing tools; patch only.

Inside the 4 × 4 in example

Repair supplies and small consumables
$30–$70
Touch-up paint allowance
$15–$45
Additional basic tool allowance
$20–$65
Total (CAD)
$65–$180

Repair allowances bundle the patch or filler, compound, tape where needed, and small consumables. Individual product prices and exact package quantities are not calculated. Texture adds a separate allowance; repainting the whole wall is outside this example.

Work time and drying time are different

The calculator gives a broad work-time allowance for the repair tasks, setup, and cleanup. It does not calculate waits between coats. Several short work sessions can stretch across multiple days.

USG gives about 24 hours for joint compound to dry at 70°F and 70% humidity; cooler or more humid conditions take longer. Follow your compound, primer, and paint labels for when to sand, recoat, and paint.

USG: joint compound drying time

Before you use the estimate

Measure each damaged spot

Enter the width and height of the damaged area, then select the repair type. Size does not automatically change the selected type. Nail holes need no dimensions. Larger holes may need backing and a drywall patch; use the repair product’s limits to choose an approach.

Keep paint and repair separate

Use “patch only” if you already have matching paint or will repaint later. If touch-up will show, estimate the full surface with the wall painting calculator. Damp, soft, or repeatedly cracking drywall needs its underlying problem assessed first.

Example assumptions reviewed September 7, 2026. Illustrative scenarios, not receipts from completed projects.

DIY planning notes

Drywall repair planning guide

Plan the patch size, surface finish, paint touch-up, and repeat visits needed for a simple drywall repair.

What affects this estimate

  • Number of damaged spots, selected repair type, and measured size
  • Smooth finish versus light or heavy texture
  • Existing tools and matching paint you can reuse
  • Drying waits and whether a whole wall needs repainting

Basic materials/tools

Materials

  • Spackle or patching compound suited to the repair
  • Patch, drywall tape, or drywall piece and backing where needed
  • Primer and matching paint if finishing now

Tools

  • Putty or taping knife and sanding supplies
  • Tape measure and utility knife where needed
  • Dust protection and cleanup supplies

Before you start

  1. 1Check that the damaged drywall is dry and sound before estimating a cosmetic repair.
  2. 2Measure each spot and choose a repair method within the product’s limits.
  3. 3Plan separate work sessions around the compound and paint drying instructions.

Watch out for

  • Treating damp or repeatedly cracking drywall as a cosmetic patch.
  • Assuming matching paint will blend without repainting a larger surface.
  • Counting drying time as hands-on work or sanding before the compound is ready.
