Estimate simple wall-mounted shelves or a basic freestanding shelf unit. This does not include custom cabinetry, built-ins, closet systems, electrical work, structural framing, hidden-hardware floating shelves, complex woodworking, or full-room renovation.

This assumes simple straight shelves. For different shelf sizes, use the average shelf length and depth.

How much does it cost to build simple shelves?

Board size is only part of the budget. Supports, fasteners, finish, and tools can cost more than the shelf boards. These examples use the calculator’s allowances for a wall in good condition with studs.

Three 36 × 10 in boards have 7.5 sq ft of face area: 3 × 36 × 10 ÷ 144. The standard-material allowance adds 10% for waste, giving 8.25 sq ft for budgeting. Displayed amounts are rounded; the total uses unrounded values.

What the quantities mean

The model budgets two support units per wall-mounted shelf. This is a cost assumption, not a bracket-spacing or load-capacity recommendation. Required supports depend on the board, span, brackets, load, wall, and fasteners.

Board area is not a cut list. Check available board widths, lengths, thicknesses, offcuts, and support instructions before buying. The freestanding option is a broad allowance; it does not produce a frame design or a complete bill of materials.

Decisions that change your budget

Tools and finish

Choose “existing tools” if you already have the cutting, drilling, leveling, and sanding tools you need. Paint or stain adds a supply and work-time allowance. Drying and curing waits are additional; follow the finish label before recoating or loading shelves.

Storage type and wall condition
